Hi Cristina,
I went to my first casting today. This agency sent me on a casting in NYC today and I wasn't given any direction or guidelines so I was unprepared. The agency said they weren't sure what I would be modeling. It turned out that I had to change into swimwear. I left the casting because I was unprepared to get into swimwear and I didn't have a book. Is it possible for me to make my own book? If so, how would I do that. What would you suggest for my next casting?

Hi Anna,

Congrats on your first casting... I am sorry it did not go as you probably planned.

The agency should have told you that you needed to change into a swimsuit. On some occasions the agency does not even know, however. As a rule, a model should always bring a swimsuit to every casting- just in case. I can tell you that I don't do this... So I would have probably left the casting as well :)

In the future, ask your agency ahead of time and/ or carry a swimsuit in your purse... If on the other hand you are not comfortable posing in a bathing suit, just let your agencies know and you will not be sent on those castings.

I would not worry about not having a portfolio. Many clients do not even look at them anymore. If you would feel more comfortable having one- just in case… You can make one at home by printing out some of your pictures on your computer and going to Staples to buy a binder.

Now you do need to have a composite card!
That is the most important thing you need at every casting. If you do not leave a composite card behind the client will most likely forget you by the time you hit the elevator. It also shows them that you are a professional.
