Preparing for Your First Shoot
Summary:
Preparing for Your First Shoot
Once you get your first booking or schedule your first test shooting you will need to prepare for the shooting day by making sure you are comfortable posing in front of the camera.
In addition, you need to make sure you are properly groomed by shaving and tweezing your eyebrows. If you dye your hair make sure your roots are not noticeably showing through. If they are, you will need to get that fixed before the shoot day.
Check your nails and make sure they are in nice shape. You do not need a manicure unless they tell you ahead of time but if you are wearing black or bright red nail polish, you need to take it off before the shoot!. Only show up at a job with a neutral shade on your nails.

Once you schedule your first modeling photo test or you book your first professional modeling shoot you need to practice beforehand. Practice in front of the mirror put some music on, look at the different poses in the magazines and try to emulate them and just try to relax. Because I think, the biggest problem new models have starting out is they go to a photo shoot and they freeze, and then the photographer says, “Okay, do something,” and then a new model get nervous. When you get tense and nervous- all of your photos will look tense and nervous. Now, when you are just starting out the level of expectation is not going to be as high as if you were a supermodel but the more prepared you are for a photo shoot the better your photos will look.
Remember in most cases you are paying for your pictures, so you want to get the best pictures that you can- prepare ahead of time. What I used to do is I memorized around 10 different poses. I would get in front of the mirror, and I would just memorize them out of the magazines. I would copy 10 different poses that I felt I looked good doing, and so when I got on set, I could always rely on those 10 poses. Now, the photographer is going to help you out.
That is why I tell you how important it is to go meet with a selection of model testing photographers ahead of time. There are some testing photographers that may tell you, “You know what, just be here on this day, and we’ll take care of it all then.” Well, I do not really feel comfortable with that, because you have not met them prior to the shooting, you have not even looked at their portfolio book. They may say, “Oh, go to my website.” Well, I would like to get a feeling for this testing photographer that I am going to be shooting with, especially, when you are making a monetary investment, and that is what it is. So, you want to get a feeling how helpful they are going be at the shooting if you are just starting out modeling. But sometimes you get photographers that expect you to already know how to pose, especially, if you are on a professional modeling job. And if the photographer is having a bad day, they may not be as helpful as you need them to be. But usually, whether at a job or a testing the photographer will tell you the direction that they are going, and they will lead you to what you they want you to do for the shot.
Remember if you are doing your own model testing- it is your money- so you want to make sure that you do the best you can. If it is an actual job, it is not your money anymore, it is a lot of someone else’s money, and there is a lot of pressure on you. There is a lot of pressure on you, and you want to make sure that at the very least you have these 10 poses and you have prepared for the shoot ahead of time- then relax. I mean everybody at the shoot wants to get a great photo. So, you just relax, if you find that you tense up when posing take an improvisational acting class and just learn how to be silly in front of other people and just do not care and laugh and get that tension off, because you do not want all of your modeling pictures to look like you are scared or nervous. These are important things you should know if you want to model.
